Book Style is back with another Every Heart a Doorway inspired look, and this time we’re looking at the bright girl who traveled to a nonsense world: Sumi.

When I started putting this together for Sumi I wanted to focus on two things. The first was that the name of her world was Confection, and the second was her relationship with Eleanor West.

Since Sumi had been basically adopted by the school and Eleanor talks about how she and Sumi’s worlds were so similar, I wanted to them to have similar crazy color combinations. At the same time, I wanted Sumi to have her own identity since part of what makes this book unique, in my opinion, is that each character has embraced their own sense of self.

As I color palette I turned to the Cream & Sugar Cafe, which makes these delicious milkshakes that have so much stuff on them they have to be called Freak Shakes! This is the Candy Crush Freak Shake:

I started with a Étoile Isabel Marant Striped Slub Linen-Blend Jersey Top in a bubblegum pink with licorice colored stripes and paired it with some white LemLem Saali Striped Cotton-Blend Gauze Pants. In part, because they looked a bit like those dots candies that you peel off a paper, I included the Christian Louboutin Boat Candy 20 Suede Slip-On Sneakers.

For jewelry, I wanted to start with a large statement necklace. So I selected the Pastel Candy Amaryllis Stone Flower Cluster Crystal Statement Necklace. It’s bold, bright, and I think the pattern complements the stripes and mixes well with Sumi’s nonsense personality. To complement the colors, I paired the necklace with a Multistrand Tassel Bracelet from Panacea and a pair of 77Spark Cotton Candy Hoops.

For accessories, I picked a Nicole Lee Cupcake Dog Print Tote, which I thought was just a cute addition to an outfit that was already rooted in confections. I also added a pair of Thierry Lasry Chromaty + Bubble Gum Pink w/ Vintage Multicolor Color Block. Then I finished off the accessories with a bubble gum phone case.

The makeup is also colorful, starting with a Dior 5 Couleurs – Polka Dots’ Eyeshadow Palette, and a Too-Faced Sketch Marker Liquid Eyeliner. For a bit of blush, I selected Tarte Cheek Stain in Tipsy, and for a final touch, I selected a bright pink Clinique Pop Glaze Sheer Lip Color + Primer.

The Book That Inspired the Look

Book Cover - Every Heart a Doorway - Seanan McGuireEleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children
No Solicitations
No Visitors
No Quests

Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere… else.

But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.

Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced… they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter.

No matter the cost.
