Alright so here we go!

In Which a College Decides She Needs to Read for Fun (Again)

Comma Hangover is actually the second version of my blog. The first one started while I was in college. I decided that I had to start reading for fun again after doing mostly coursework, but left to my own devices I would’ve abandoned that goal. So, one summer I started a book blog! It was mostly just book reviews, which I am probably going to transfer here at some point.

Then, I graduated college and hit a point where I thought if I didn’t write or read something I would approach insanity and I would do so really quickly. So, I started Comma Hangover. By that time, several years had passed, I learned a lot more about writing for the internet, and how a blog is indexed, plus a fair amount about web usability.

By that time, several years had passed, I learned a lot more about writing for the internet, and how a blog is indexed, plus a fair amount about web usability. So I dove into Comma Hangover and tried memes, reviews, tags, and a variety of different posts.

My Advice to Bloggers

1. Scheduling is your friend (and so are memes)! Everyone says that having movement on your blog is crucial to staying relevant but it can get tiring. So what I tend to do is join a few memes, work on and schedule the posts. That was it’s one less thing I have to worry about for the coming weeks, and I can focus my energies on reviews, discussion posts, and tags.

A few of my favorites are Memorable Mondays, Waiting on Wednesday, Book Traveling Thursdays (which I am hosting starting in September), and WWW Wednesdays. Most bloggers do these in some form and you just have to find the ones that work in your schedule. Another one that I really like, that I think is a lot of fun each week is The Sunday Post, which is just a weekly wrap-up with a link up.

2. Remember that while search engine indexing will determine if your blog appears in search results, you are the boss of your blog. So be honest with your reviews, do the memes and tags that interest you, write in whatever style suits your voice and just remember to have fun, because on your blog no one is going to say: “I don’t like that, it needs to change” unless it’s you! And you are free to make changes!

  1. I like that you mentioned that you are the boss of your blog! People seem to change things if they’re popular or the”new thing” but you’re so right. Do what you want and what you love! Your passion will always shine through!
And thanks for the nomination! I hope to get to it soon!

    1. Thank you so much! But it really is a “job” that no one has to her you for! There are ways to make money from it and ways to maximize your page views, but you need to be passionate or it becomes “a job!” And I cannot wait to see your post! 🙂

  2. Thanks so much for the nomination Lauren, I have already done this one though so I probably won’t be taking part again because my answers would be the same. 🙂
I loved reading your advice though. I’ve discovered the joy of scheduling and drafting my posts and it has been an absolute life-saver, especially when it comes to the memes because there are normally prompts up for the next few weeks you can get started on ahead of time. And yes blogging for yourself is definitely important! 😀
    Great advice Lauren.

  3. Thanks so much for nominating me! ❤ I also love your advice. When I first started blogging I was a bit intimidated by all of the "rules" I thought existed… and then I realized that they didn't matter at all! 🙂

    1. There are so many rules! And I think if you start out worrying about Google Indexing and headings and such then you are going to get boxed in, but if you just post because you love your content then it gets easier and it’s not a chore. Sure you want an audience but writing is something that you can just do as is reviewing and people will come.

  4. Great advice! I always love seeing other people give the “you’re the boss” advice–because it’s so true and if you don’t think that, you can find a lot of really arbitrary “rules” out there that make you feel bad if you aren’t following. Also, I’m so excited you’ll be hosting Book Traveling Thursdays–one of my favorites (though I’ve been struggling with consistency since the school year started!). Thanks so much for the nomination, too!!

Memes have been a savior for me, it’s just a question of finding ones that gel with your schedule and blog. I actually highly recommend Book Traveling Thursday’s. It might be a little more involved but it is so much fun to see other book covers!

  6. Such great advice Lauren! Scheduling especially ahead of time makes such a difference! I include planning in that I decide what I should post on the other days too so I don’t have to agonize I can get to writing ♥️ Thanks for the shout out! I can’t wait to see Sept prompts for Book Traveling Thursday!
