It’s time for another edition of Book Style. This outfit is inspired by the main character in Everything You Want Me to Be by Mindy Mejia.

With Hattie’s look, I wanted to walk a line between a fashion forward teenager, dreaming of a life in New York City, and  a blank slate who can easily conform to whoever she is supposed to be in that moment.

When Hattie’s body is discovered at the beginning of the book, they note that she’s wearing a yellow dress. So I wanted to find something that was a close to the description as possible and still be suited for a seventeen year old girl. Del describes the dress as “a yellow sundress with some ruffly stuff on it,” so started with the Cédric Charlier Ruffle-trimmed crepe de chine dress and I paired it with Aquazzura Ivy Flat Sandals.

The only accessory I’ve included in this collection is a sterling silver Jane Eyre book charm, as a nod to one of the plays that Hattie was in during the book.

When we first meet Hattie, she is on her way to the airport, so I wanted to give her luggage worthy of a plane trip. So I started with a Rebecca Minkoff Regan Satchel Tote and a Calpak Ambeur 20-Inch Rolling Spinner Carry-On. I also included the Sony Hdr-Cx405 Full Hd Handycam Camcorder so that Hattie can record herself rehearsing or a little confessional of sorts.

Given that Hattie is an expert at blending in and conforming, I thought it ideal to start of the with the tarte Rainforest of the Sea™ Wipeout Color-Correcting Palette. This palette has everything that Hattie would need to correct any blemishes in one convenient case. The color correcting palette will be followed by Too-Faced Born This Way Foundation.

For a nice neutral eye with a little bit of color the Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics Palette has a nice array of colors. To compliment the palette, I selected the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Demolition. This is a beautiful deep matte brown that would really bring out Hattie’s eyes.

For the final touch, I wanted a deep red lip color like the face on the cover, so I selected Lipstick Queen All That Jazz Lipstick in Hot Piano.

The Book That Inspired the Look

Everything You Want Me to Be by Mindy MejiaNo one knows who she really is…

Hattie Hoffman has spent her whole life playing many parts: the good student, the good daughter, the good girlfriend. But Hattie wants something more, something bigger, and ultimately something that turns out to be exceedingly dangerous. When she’s found brutally stabbed to death, the tragedy rips right through the fabric of her small-town community.

It soon comes to light that Hattie was engaged in a highly compromising and potentially explosive secret online relationship. The question is: Did anyone else know? And to what lengths might they have gone to end it? Hattie’s boyfriend seems distraught over her death, but had he fallen so deeply in love with her that she had become an obsession? Or did Hattie’s impulsive, daredevil nature simply put her in the wrong place at the wrong time, leading her to a violent death at the hands of a stranger?

Full of twists and turns, Everything You Want Me to Be  reconstructs a year in the life of a dangerously mesmerizing young woman, during which a small town’s darkest secrets come to the forefront…and she inches closer and closer to death.

Evocative and razor-sharp, Everything You Want Me to Be  challenges you to test the lines between innocence and culpability, identity and deception. Does love lead to self-discovery—or destruction?
