Book Traveling Thursdays // A Book Set in High School or College

Book Traveling Thursdays is a weekly feature created by Danielle’s Book Blog and The Girl Who Read Too Much that highlights book covers from around the world.

This week we’re celebrating back to school with books that take place in high school or college. I haven’t read many books that take place in a high school as of late, but I did recently pick up Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell.

This impulse purchase ended up being a great light read that fit this prompt perfectly. I am glad I read it. It even inspired me to style an outfit based on Eleanor.

Now, onto the covers!

Original Cover

I love the original United States cover for Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. The simple design behind the original cover (left) really captures the book beautifully.

The collector’s edition (right) doesn’t mess with the cover too much except for a few color changes. Much respect for doing that St. Martin’s Pres.

Favorite Covers

I love the original cover for this book, and it seems like most publishers around the world are in the same frame of mind. So it was hard to pick other favorites for this particular cover, but I eventually settled on the Dutch, English (UK Edition), and the Malaysian edition.

What I love about the Dutch edition was how it got the cassette tape and the school bus on the cover. So much of the story takes place on the bus and so much of it involves music. I love the way those details come together here.

The UK Edition has a really cool cover design but it really doesn’t embody the story for me. I don’t hate it, and it’s a beautiful design that I would definitely be drawn to in a store, but knowing the story, this isn’t my favorite amongst my favorites.

The Malay edition reminds me a bit of the Dutch edition, but without the bus. I love the color and the composition and it’s still something I would pick up in the store.

Least Favorite Cover

There are many great covers for this book and most capture the spirit of the story, but there are a few that I disliked. This time around my least favorite covers are the Modern Greek, Ukrainian, and Serbian editions.

I know I commented on another Book Traveling Thursday about the Modern Greek edition. The photo used here makes no sense to me. Why would they pick this photo on a train track when there is no scene that takes place anywhere near a train track?

The Ukrainian edition is the closest to my favorite covers. At first glance, I thought that I was looked at a bald-headed Eleanor. I didn’t realize the red section was supposed to be her hair. I could get behind the composition if the red was slightly brighter or was rendered differently.

The Serbian cover doesn’t remind me at all of the story. I love the teal background and the use of negative space, but it just doesn’t embody the book for me.

That does it for this edition of Book Traveling Thursdays! What is your favorite book set in a high school or college? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. For some reason the Ukrainian cover really makes me think of Merida from Brave lol! My favourite cover is the Dutch version — I love the colours and the tape spooling.
